No More Broken Promises

Last year, I was working on my kickboxing and body combat moves to help maintain my physique. It's been a long road from coming from trying to lose the baby weight (literally) to where I am now. However, every time I step on a scale, my weight does not seem to have changed all that much, yet there is a significant weight loss from 2009 through 2019. But keeping the weight off with kickboxing and body combat fitness are not the only reasons why I do it. While many of us focus on the idea of #selfcare as an educator, we tend to focus on the word instead of on the actual truth. I can admit that I am one of those people. I talk the talk but it's hard for me to walk the walk. Why? It's because I make excuses on why I don't focus much on my own self-care.

I do my workouts, attend fitness classes, and work on kickboxing at home. This helps me mentally as well as physically be fit. This is all part of my self-care. However, there are other parts to my self-care that I lack taking care of, such as not feeling well.

For the last three weeks, I have had a major sinus infection where my nose is raw and there is continuous coughing and blowing my nose. For the past three weeks, I should have called my ENT to make an appointment regarding my sinuses. Two years ago, I had sinus surgery because my sinuses were filled with fluid. Part of self-care is not only to focus on my mental well-being but my physical one as well. Part of my self-care is to focus on all parts of my well-being in order for me to focus on my students. While I did not have any excuses earlier why I have not made that appointment, my excuses start with the new year because of meeting the insurance copays. However, coughing and blowing my nose everyday, every second of the day for the last three weeks is not worth the fact that I need to make that appointment.

My point is that while we say we want to focus on self-care we really need to focus on self-care, which means every aspect of it. No more broken resolutions, no more broken promises. Time to focus on my own self-care because if I do not focus on myself, I won't be able to focus on my students.
