United We Stand, Divided We Fall

I lived through chicken pox, measles, bird flu, H1N1, Y2K, 9-11, the end of the world (at least 3 times already) and other natural disasters that happened in the last few decades of my life. However, this is the first virus that I have seen the nation take precautions to require a national emergency to “shut down.” I understand that precautions is an essential part to staying healthy; we also must take the time to critically think about what’s happening within our society.

I could go on about conspiracy theories, reasons why people are being quarantined, and the fact that education will go to virtual learning, etc. But we must really take the time to think about and learn is why these precautions are being placed. Many of my educator friends are offering online tips, helpful videos to continue learning, and offer help in anyway through various social media platforms. However, the most important part of learning is teaching our own children about what is happening in our society. To be honest with them not to scare them but to teach them.

Too many times I’m seeing and hearing how sports are canceled, community events are canceled, stores are shutting down, and the ravaging of toilet paper, which I still don’t get — (toilet paper and water) and yet many (especially those born in 2000 and after) are complaining how things are not fair. Many of these people have not lived through the earlier "disasters" of how society was tested time after time. I did not live through WWI, WWI, Vietnam and so on. I was not alive during the Great Depression and yet each time American rose like the Phoenix and rebuilt itself. Take the time to be with families, to learn from each other, and to focus on our health. The most important lesson we can learn from what is happening is not to let it stop us from living.

In the last 36 hours, I watched movies with my family, playing board games, made dinner at home, played with our dog, exercised, and realized how important it is not to condemn myself to this virus. I ask that you do the same. Spend time with your families, don't complain what about sporting events are canceled, it's not important that to go out to the mall or the movies, and for sake of others... purchase only as much toilet paper that is needed for your family. No matter what you believe or who you believe in .... be the best part of society that you can be.
