Using Differentiated Instruction in the Teaching Profession
1984 / Anthem
In creating this dual novel breakout activity, another teacher and I collaborated on George Orwell's novel, 1984, and Ayn Rand's novel, Anthem to create a Dystopian experience. We combined students from one class to students from the other class allowing the students to collaborate with each other. Because one class read 1984 and the other class read Anthem, they were to work together to solve the clues as we collected information from both novels to create this activity.
This is an example to start the activity:
The year is 3032 where World War III was a nuclear war that caused the nation to crumble once again to create a dystopian society. You are the last survivors; you have 45 minutes to breakout to be to be considered safe. If you don’t succeed, you will become a casualty of war. There are several boxes around the room. You have been grouped and must work together to survive. You are not safe; inside the locked box your group will find information to help you survive until the democratic power is restored. You must work together as a team. Use the clues to find the combinations.
